Last night, like any other film buff, I was glued to the TV from about 8:30pm until 11:30pm because of the Oscars. (or if you were like me, until 1am because you recorded Walking Dead and watched it IMMEDIATELY after the Oscars.) I won't go into who should've won Best Actor *coughLEOcough* or what should've won Best Picture *coughGRAVITY* Sorry. I'm just getting over Snubitis. What I am here to discuss is the wonderful animated short film that won last night called Mr. Hublot. I'm going to be honest, when I'm filling out my ballots for the Oscars, I usually just close my eyes and point and choose who's going to win in categories like Best Animated Short Film and and Best Documentary and other categories that have films that I haven't heard of. This year was no different. I blindly chose like I usually do and picked the ones that sounded interesting. When it came to the Best Short Animated Film section, I watched three random trailers that showed on the ballot and made my decision based on that. One of those trailers was Mr. Hublot. The name alone I thought was fun just because I pronounced it like it's spelled. Hublot. Hu.Blot. I mean even as I type this, I'm cracking up at the name. Come to find out though, it's pronounced Hublow. I like Hublot better though. Mr. Hublot has so much going for it other than it's name. It's visually appealing with it's steam punk style. Also, without using any words in the film, he engages you and invites you into his daily routine. That's what I liked most about Mr. Hublot. You feel like you're going through the day with him and you're hanging out with him.
Without giving too much away, because I want you to actually watch it, Mr. Hublot is a normal robot who lives in this normal world that requires him to just go through the motions and not give any though throughout his day. One day, he sees this dog and he decides to take him as his own and it forces Mr. Hublot to change his boring, simple life.
You won't regret watching this. I promise. Mr. Hublot has taught me for one...never skip the animated short film section EVER again, and two, to spice up life when you feel like you're in a rut in a world that makes it easy to do so.
Enjoy your fap break!
